What are the steps if I want to be evaluated for the AbioCor® System?

If you and your health care team determine that you could potentially benefit from the AbioCor, you will begin the Informed Consent process. This means that your physicians will discuss additional information regarding the risks and benefits of the procedure with you and your family. You will receive more details about the results from the initial AbioCor clinical trial at that time.

During the Informed Consent process, a Patient Advocate will be available to help you understand the information in the consent form and answer your questions. The Patient Advocate maintains a role of “neutrality” and is there for your benefit only. The Patient Advocate will also discuss end-of-life care options with you.

If you and your doctor at a qualified AbioCor Medical Center agree that the AbioCor may be the appropriate treatment for you, you will receive a thorough medical evaluation.

With your consent, your health care team will obtain your past medical history and any related medical information. In addition, you will have a Computed Tomography (CT) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan to determine if the AbioCor Replacement Heart will fit in your chest.

How will I decide if the AbioCor® is right for me? Your physician and other members of the health care team will help you make the decision as to whether the AbioCor is right for you. You will be assigned a coordinator who will collect information, schedule appointments, and keep you informed of the process. You will undergo a medical evaluation to help your health care team determine whether the AbioCor is a good option for you. This evaluation requires several tests that will be conducted over a few days.
